Do Probiotics Actually Help With Bloating and Gas? What 5 Controlled Trials Found

Do Probiotics Actually Help With Bloating and Gas? 8 Trials Reviewed

Probiotics are often recommended for bloating, but "probiotics" is not one thing: each trial tests a particular strain or blend, at a particular dose, in a particular group of people. Below are five randomised, placebo-controlled trials that measured bloating directly. Some found a clear benefit, some found a narrower one, and one did not meet its main goal. Reading them together gives a more honest picture than any single headline.

This article is for general education and is not medical advice. Ongoing or severe bloating should be assessed by a doctor, and you should speak to your doctor before starting a supplement, particularly if you are immunocompromised, pregnant, or managing a diagnosed condition.

The five trials at a glance

1. Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM + Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07

Ringel-Kulka and colleagues randomised 60 people with non-constipation functional bowel disorders to this two-strain combination or placebo for eight weeks. Bloating severity improved more in the probiotic group than with placebo, and results were similar in the subgroup with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).[1]

2. A multi-species synbiotic in generally healthy adults

Allegretti and colleagues ran a six-week, double-blind trial in 350 adults with self-reported bloating or indigestion, comparing a multi-species probiotic plus pomegranate extract with placebo. The synbiotic group reported less bloating and gas, less abdominal discomfort and better gastrointestinal quality of life than the placebo group.[2]

3. A multi-strain probiotic complex in functional bowel disorders

In a smaller eight-week trial, Bang and colleagues randomised 38 adults with functional constipation or functional diarrhoea to a multi-strain probiotic or placebo. The probiotic reduced the severity of abdominal bloating and how much it interfered with quality of life, alongside shifts in gut bacterial composition.[3]

4. Bacillus velezensis BV379: a narrower result

Garvey and colleagues gave 80 healthy adults this spore-forming strain or placebo for eight weeks. The trial's main outcome, a combined score for bloating, burping and gas, did not differ significantly from placebo. Looking at bloating alone, more people improved on the probiotic than on placebo. It was well tolerated.[4]

5. Bacillus subtilis ATCC 122264: no overall difference

LeMoire and colleagues randomised 100 healthy adults with functional bloating to this strain or placebo for eight weeks. Overall, it did not differ from placebo on gas or bloating scores. In a subgroup analysis, women taking it reported less belching and flatulence; the authors say this needs confirming in further studies.[5]

What the five trials add up to

  • Some products have helped bloating in controlled trials. Three of the five trials found an improvement in bloating, and one found an improvement in bloating alone but not on its main combined score.
  • Results are product-specific. The trials tested different strains and blends, so a result for one cannot be assumed for another, even within the same species.
  • The populations differed. Some trials enrolled healthy adults with occasional bloating, others people with diagnosed functional bowel disorders.
  • Timeframes were weeks, not days. All five ran for six to eight weeks, which is a reasonable minimum before judging whether a probiotic is helping you.

Practical takeaways

  • Give any probiotic a consistent trial of several weeks rather than switching after a few days.
  • Keep notes on bloating and on the meals that trigger it; if specific foods are the trigger, a digestive enzyme matched to that food may be the more direct tool.
  • Bloating with weight loss, bleeding, fever, vomiting or night-time symptoms needs a doctor's assessment, not a supplement.

Where The Vital Co. fits

Vital Gut Restore provides 20 billion CFU across 13 named strains in one capsule a day: eight Lactobacillus and five Bifidobacterium, including L. acidophilus and B. lactis, the two species used in the Ringel-Kulka trial. The label lists species rather than the specific trial strains (NCFM and Bi-07), and Vital Gut Restore itself has not been tested in these trials, so the findings above describe the research landscape rather than promise a result from this product.

Because post-meal bloating often has more than one cause, the De-Bloat & Digest Stack pairs Vital Gut Restore with Vital Digestive Enzyme Pro Blend, which supplies lactase and alpha-galactosidase among six labelled enzyme activities.

About The Vital Co.

Three pillars — gut, inflammation and longevity — and a simple rule behind every formula: we start with published human research, print our amount next to the amount the studies actually used, and say so plainly when ours is the smaller number. If we wouldn't take it ourselves, it doesn't go on the site.
