Absorption, and what the piperine study measured
Curcuminoids are poorly absorbed when taken on their own, and that is well documented. Shoba and colleagues (Planta Medica, 1998) gave volunteers 2g of curcumin and found it barely detectable in serum; with 20mg of piperine alongside it, serum curcumin was readily detectable. That was a small pharmacokinetic study measuring blood levels over a few hours after a single dose.
Platinum Turmeric includes BioPerine® piperine at 10mg, against the 20mg used in that study. It pairs 800mg of turmeric root powder with 100mg of an extract standardised to 95% curcuminoids, and adds glucosamine sulfate at 200mg, ginger root extract at 100mg, chondroitin sulfate at 50mg, boswellia extract at 40mg and MSM at 10mg. Can I take this with other anti-inflammatory supplements?
Yes. Curcumin and omega-3 act through different pathways. If you take blood thinners, check with your doctor first — both can affect platelet function.
