Your cells have a switch that decides between storing energy and spending it.

The enzyme is called AMPK, and it works like a fuel gauge. When energy runs low it activates, and the cell shifts from building and storing toward burning what it already has. Exercise activates it. So does fasting. So does berberine — which is how a yellow compound from barberry root ended up in metabolic research rather than staying in the spice cupboard.

  • Activates AMPK, the enzyme that responds to a cell’s energy state
  • A dual standardised extract, at 8% and 97%
  • Taken with meals
  • 60 capsules — 30 servings, with the full amounts on the panel below

What berberine is, and what the AMPK research covers

Berberine is an isoquinoline alkaloid found in several plants and used in traditional medicine for a long time. In laboratory work it activates AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase), an enzyme present in every cell that responds to the cell’s energy state and shifts it toward using stored energy. Exercise activates AMPK too.

Human research on berberine has focused mainly on blood glucose and lipids, largely in people with diagnosed metabolic conditions rather than in healthy adults. Xie and colleagues pooled 37 randomised trials in 3,048 people, and those trials used 0.9 to 2.4g of berberine daily, split across meals (Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2022).

Vital Berberine provides 800mg of dual standardised extract per serving, which works out at around 73mg of berberine HCl. We publish both figures so you can hold them against the research. Take it with meals. Berberine can interact with prescription medication — particularly for blood sugar and blood pressure — so speak to your doctor before starting if that applies to you.

Common Questions

How should I take berberine?

With meals. Splitting it across two meals is closer to how most trials dosed it than taking it all at once.

Is berberine safe to take with medications?

It can interact with several classes of medication, particularly those for blood sugar and blood pressure, and it affects the same liver enzymes as many drugs. If you take prescription medication, ask your doctor before starting.

How long until I see results?

Trials measuring glucose markers generally run eight to twelve weeks. If you are tracking anything, track it over that kind of window rather than over days.
